Emotional Literacy

We have all been in a situation where we are overloaded with emotions and can't find any place to release them. A stressful day at work might make you angry over the smallest thing your friend might have done. Or an argument with a friend might result in ignoring your work.

We are animals with complex emotions that sometimes drive us to do something that we never intended to do. Think of emotions as a direction to where your instincts want you to go. For example, feeling angry over somebody or something could be a sign that something is not okay. It could be that your work is stressful or your relationships need mending or the new government policy isn't great or you hate math. Being happy with your partner could mean that you are satisfied with your romantic life. Your emotions are a 'status report' of your mind's well-being.

Like everything in life, your emotions could be wrong and misdirected too. Maybe the work wasn't stressful, but you don't like it as much as you should. Or does the government policy looks great from a different perspective or math is fun...?!?

It might sound weird but happiness can also be misdirected. That's the thing with emotions. Sometimes they aren't reliable. And that's okay, for we are animals with complex emotions that sometimes drive us to do something that we never intended to do. Being emotionally literate is to understand this and to coexist with your emotional self. It is to treat your emotions as advisors and hear what they have to say about you. It is also to identify your emotions and act upon (or against) the feelings in a healthy and socially acceptable manner. Lastly, it is to hear your emotions out and make a decision.

You may not always do what your emotions want you to do. You may stick to your job, or break up with someone, or continue reading math. What matters is that you acknowledge your emotions and let them know that you are hearing them out.
